Usage and Applications of Authentic Activities

Authentic learning activities representative of real-life situations can be developed and implemented in almost any academic setting.  Authentic activities should encourage students to participate in cognitive processes such as organization, problem-solving, meaningful learning, and decision making.  Classroom authentic activities may include:

  • Conducting a Science Experiment
  • Writing a Journal Article
  • Performing in a Play
  • Constructing an Object
  • Role Playing
  • Giving a Speech
  • Participating in a Debate
  • Creating a Web Page
  • Creating a Photo Journal
  • Developing a Poster for a Learning Fair (Ormrod, 2012)

  2. Sondra,
This is an excellent web page and blog! Applying this learning to nursing, do you think case scenarios, case studies or simulation could also fall into examples of this concept? We have a class called, "Your Patient is Going South, and It Is Not to the Beach!" Scenarios are presented to a group and they work together to rescue the patient.

Yes, those are examples of authentic learning activities. The scenario you mentioned is a perfect example of incorporating authentic activities that mirror real-life situations, enabling participants to be better prepared in the workplace.
